Windsor: A Town Rich In History And Tradition
The town of Windsor is one of the tourist attractions in England which is rich in European history and culture. It is located close to Charing Cross and River Thames and has a population of about 30,000 people. Despite being small in size, the town has numerous tourist attractions. Some of the Windsor attractions include The Windsor Great Park, Queen Mary’s Doll’s House, The Windsor Castle, Legoland Windsor Resort, and Burnham Beeches, among others.
For those obsessed with the history of the early British Monarchy, the rich British history found here is probably one of the best Windsor attractions. The history of this town dates back things to do the time when the Norman King, William the Conqueror expressed interest in the riverside settlement and went ahead to build a bailey castle. Today, the small town is filled with several historical landmarks such as The Windsor Great Park, a park that has been used as a filming location for many popular movies such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, Snow White and the Huntsmen, and Robin Hood.
The Windsor Castle, Berkshire County is among Britain’s top tourist attractions. Constructed in the 11th century by King William the Conqueror, it is one of the oldest inhabited places in the world and also one of the largest castles in the world. Within the castle, tourists can view the Royal Collection of Art, visit the magnificent State Apartments and watch the changing of the guard, hence making this a major Windsor attraction.
Queen Mary’s Dolls House is an exquisite Windsor attraction that is definitely worth a visit. It was built in 1927 for Queen Mary, wife to King George V. The doll house is a miniature representation of a magnificent palace that is filled with the works of some of the finest artists and artisans of the 20th Century. Some of the tourist attractions here include working lifts, electric lighting, cisterns, running water and miniature novels.
For the adventure lovers, Windsor also offers the Legoland Windsor Resort, a Windsor attraction that attracts millions of visitors every year. The 150-acre amusement park features more than 55 rides, live shows, and structures made of more than 80 million Lego bricks. Tourists have the opportunity to take rides, view Lego models, watch live shows and even conduct construction workshops.
Burnham Beeches is yet another Windsor attraction that consists of ancient woodland best accessed by foot. Visitors are free to enjoy picnics and BBQs in the picturesque open space. It is especially unique because it is one of the Windsor attractions that are home to a number of endangered species, a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as many trees, some of which are several hundred thousand years old.
Close to the Windsor castle is the Ascot Racecourse, also known as the Racecourse of the Royal Family. Ascot Racecourse contains two tracks that allow it to run both flat racing and the national hunt. It is another Windsor attraction that attracts thousands of visitors annually for the 26 days of racing. Moreover, the racecourse hosts jump racing during the winter months.
